About the Journal of Transformative Studies

A meta-paradigmatic, transdisciplinary journal researching the intersection between self, society, and transformation.

      JTS is a transdisciplinary journal that publishes innovative research combining rigorous scholarship, creativity, and self-inquiry. The Journal is especially interested in articles that involve one or more of the following:

1) Articles that make an original transdisciplinary research contribution in a chosen area of inquiry;

2) Articles that engage in inquiry as a creative, and collaborative process;

3) Articles that engage in inquiry as an integral, spiritual, and transformative process of personal and social transformation;

4) Articles that apply one’s research to real-world problems, articulating and embodying one’s values, and skillfully putting theory into practice.

      JTS' purview is transdisciplinary. The Journal seeks articles that are inquiry-driven rather than exclusively grounded in a single discipline. The Journal is meta-paradigmatic. Weight is given to articles expressing a plurality of perspectives and disciplines, and to those which effectively excavate the underlying assumptions and paradigms informing them. We actively seek submissions that demonstrate inquiry that connects and contextualizes in order to integrate different, even divergent perspectives in a coherent way.

      JTS also places importance on the role of the knower in the process of knowing. We consider the psychology of knowledge, which addresses such issues perception, assumptions, projection, creativity, habits of mind, error and illusion, and imagination, as central to the process of inquiry; as well as the sociology of knowledge, which contextualizes inquiry in its social, cultural, and political milieu. We view academic inquiry as an opportunity for and exploration of the roots and matrices of knowledge in self and society.

      We see all inquiry as an opportunity for self-inquiry. Self-inquiry, in turn, supports and informs increasing academic depth and sophistication. Articles we publish demonstrate understanding of the biases, assumptions, aspirations; and emotional investment that they bring to the process of inquiry. Academic inquiry is framed as an opportunity for personal and social transformation, as a spiritual practice, and as an opportunity to cultivate creativity.

      The articles we publish stress the interrelationship between theory and practice and, in summary, generally demonstrate some combination of the following:

  • Knowledge, understanding, and application of multiple theoretical approaches to transformative studies at the individual, group, organizational, and societal levels.
  • Reflection on the role of the psychology and sociology of knowledge.
  • Application, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple theoretical approaches.
  • An understanding of the ways in which differing approaches structure knowledge.
  • Responsible transdisciplinary use of knowledge from multiple disciplines, critically engaging with their literatures, approaches to knowledge, underlying assumptions, and theories.
  • Articulation of the author's approach to transformative studies in his or her area of inquiry, while situating it in appropriate discourses and fields.
  • Demonstration of the ability to accept and work with ambiguity and paradox.
  • Sufficient command of methodology to be able to apply one or more appropriate method to a research question, and to evaluate the appropriateness of various methods in the exploration of different kinds of questions.
